There is a phrase often repeated here, seemingly more so on Koh Phangan than many other places, that phrase is “Thailand is Thailand” or TIT for short.
I had a fantastic example of TIT today, I have been trying to open a bank account you see, now this is not straightforward. Depending on who you speak to in which bank and what kind of mood they are in you might be able to achieve it. Personally today I drew a blank at six banks, they all told me I need a work permit. I found this amusing as I know somebody who opened an account just last week with one of them and had no work permit.
So after trying the sixth bank in a row I decided it was time for a coffee and myself and Nuth popped into a cafe next door to the Bank of Bangkok. Whilst we were in the cafe the manager of the bank came in and spoke to Nuth. He told her he might be able to do something for me “next time”, when I asked what she meant by next time she implied the meant when nobody else was listening. What a crazy place I live in.
