So we had one of those days today, when the gods of TOT and out local ISP decide we need a day off, and make sure that our internet connections does not work during prime time work hours, here upon Kph Phangan.

Luckily Joakim and myself managed to get the days scheduling out of the way before things went bad, but that’s just about all we managed to get done today.

I always worry on days like this that some disaster will befall one of the team members, from a work standpoint, and I will be unavailable to resolve the situation.

Maybe I should relent and give out my telephone number to the remote team members, certainly to Taylor out editor at least.

Anyway, as I was laying on the balcony today, hoping that the gods of TOT would forgive us and let us have our toys back, I found an interesting view of the ceiling, so snapped it with my phone, here it is:

A little weird I know, but interesting enough.

Oh well, lets hope our internet connections stays up now, and I can get a full days work in tomorrow.

Leon is now one year and three months old, and I am very glad to tell you that he is already displaying signs of being every bit as slippery as his Father! Yesterday Nuth bought some snacks from a food cart that comes by the house now and then; she bought some BBQ chicken for Ball (her 10 year old Son from her first marriage) and some lua kheen (kind of deep fried fish dough balls) for Leon. So Leon takes one look at his fish balls, then looks at the BBQ chicken and instantly decides he wants that instead. His brother tells him ok, finish eating all your fish balls and you can have some chicken, then turns his back and starts talking to a friend.

Leon looks at his brother, and then carefully hides the fish balls behind him on the chair he is sitting on. He then shouts for his brother to pay attention to him, and opens his mouth to show it’s empty. Ball then says, ok you have finished the fish balls here is some chicken and hands him a drumstick. Leon eats the chicken, and by the time he is done with it Ball has finished his chicken also. Leon then looks his brother right in the eye, reaches behind his back, grabs a fish ball and stuffs it in his mouth, laughing at his brother all the time! I was so proud of him!

As I mentioned in my previous post, I was going out to the village to attend a celebration that is specific to the region of Thailand in which I live. The entire village spent all day cooking food, to be left for the ghosts of dead family members to eat, complete with beer, whiskey and bottles of coke. Of course, as expected the ghosts didn’t actually eat much of it, so around midnight we had the chance to eat all the left overs!

This is the spread that Nuth’s family prepared in their house (every house in the village did the same), when you consider that this represents the kind of food they can seldom afford to cook for themselves, then it becomes apparent just how seriously they take their dead relatives. My particular favourite was the bowl of tiny fried fish, very tasty!

It’s Nuth’s birthday in a few days, so last week I asked her what she wanted as a birthday present. She said she didn’t know and would think about it. I thought she would come back to me and say a bracelet or something; she had also been making exciting noises about these little electric scooter things they are selling in the local supermarket, so I figured jewellery or one of these.

Eventually she calls me up and says hey I know what I want for my birthday, so I ask her what, and she says… two cows…

I really was not expecting this answer! So, anyway today we went and bought the two cows and they are now happily in her father’s old cow shed. I think this is possibly the strangest birthday present I have ever given somebody.

I’m looking at plane tickets today, and am seriously thinking about jumping on a plane three months early. My mother has been ill for many years, but she seems to be getting worse a lot quicker now. Only a couple of weeks ago she had an accident, fell out of bed and broke her hip, she was rushed to hospital for an emergency hip replacement.

Yesterday my step sister let me know that she is back in hospital with an infection in her gallbladder and they are going to remove it, so she will have had surgery twice this month for two separate things. I haven’t been back to the UK for a couple of years, I think I should go and visit her.

There is a children’s playground right next to my apartment block, it also has a running track, and most morning there are a few people jogging around it, trying to keep fit. At one end of the park is an open storm drain, not very big, not very deep, take a look at this picture below.

You see that white concrete bridge? Well that’s the storm drain underneath it. This is about 100 metres from my house, I took this picture from my balcony. This morning at 6am, a jogger discovered three dead children in the storm drain, supposedly drowned. They were a pair of brothers and a friend, quite young about four or five years old.

Now what the hell are three kids of this age doing out on their own at 6am in the morning? Why didn’t anyone see them? How did all three manage to die? Surely if one fell in the others would shout or go for help? There are shops just across the street, and this is a fairly busy road, the chances of nobody seeing three boys get into this kind of trouble is extremely slim even at 6am.

I think there is something suspicious about all this, it just does not add up to me, I don’t believe it is possible that this could have been an accident.

The charge for electricity is 6 Baht per unit, and I know for a fact that they are paying around 4 Baht a unit, so they are basically stealing 2 Baht a unit from me. It’s not going well though, very few decent options here.

Anyway, I’ve been working hard lately, so we are going to take a holiday next month and go back to Koh Phangan and visit some friends. If I haven’t found a decent place to live by the time we are due to leave the island, I might think about moving back there, although I’m not sure Nuth would be pleased about this.

Leon is growing at an alarming rate, and he is turning in to quite a character, above is a picture of him eating his breakfast, and giving me a nasty look because I keep trying to steal one of his eggs.

Well the last week has seen my three buses arrive in quick succession. Firstly I am snowed under with work right now, not a problem in itself, but definitely a problem when considered as part of the overall situation. Secondly, Nuth has been sick, meaning I have had to take care of Leon, no time for work, anyone who thinks you can take care of a baby and still get a full days work in is living on a different planet. Lastly, the Internet in the apartment building has been terrible lately, most of the time it is unusable. So between looking after Leon, and a dodgy Internet connection, I have managed to dig myself in to quite a hole with a huge backlog of work. This week I am going to need to put in something like 60 hours just to catch up! Oh well, fingers crossed I can clear my desk by the end of the week and take a couple of days off.
