Too hot to work

Koh Phangan, Work August 31st, 2007

I’ve started queuing up a lot of work, this is a good thing, it earns me food tokens. There is one small problem though.

If the sun comes up early in the morning it heats up the roof at the front of the house. This means the entire top floor feels like you are sitting underneath a radiator. This is just no good for working, it’s far too hot, a fan just blows hot air at you.

So now I’m trying to find an office with air conditioning, I only need a single room with a desk to put my PC under. Do you think I can find something? Like hell I can, plenty of shops for rent but no offices!

I’ll keep looking, maybe something will turn up.

I hate being messed around.

Freelancing, Pissed Off, Work August 31st, 2007

I was contacted by somebody asking me to write for them a couple of weeks ago. They told me they had work for me every day and would pay me at the end of each day via PayPal.

I thought this was pretty ok, so I agreed and they sent me the first day of work. I completed it to a good standard and returned it. It then took 2 days before the client got around to paying me, I should have heard the warning bells then, considering they had told me they would pay each day.

So 3 days after the first days work they sent me another load, which I completed and returned. There was two rounds of edits and then they sent me a tiny amount of work for the next day. Again it took 2 days for them to pay me. They also sent me an email saying they would be sending me some more work over in a few hours. That was 5 days ago.

I’m really not happy about this, I turned down a couple of projects because I thought I would not have the time as this client told me they had work for me almost every day. I have emailed them several times asking if they intend to send more work but I get no reply.

If any of you freelancers out there are ever approached by a company named ‘No Doubt Marketing’ then I suggest you steer clear of them.

Yet another party

Fun, Koh Phangan, Personal August 30th, 2007

It’s the Moon Set Party tonight, luckily this one is just up the road from me in Pirates Bar which is a damn good thing because I’m knackered. You have probably heard the saying ‘life is one long party’ well let me tell you that kinda life is bloody tiring! I could do with a night at home laying in bed watching a movie with a nice cup of tea! Except you can’t get decent tea here, well you can you just can’t get proper milk, it’s all UHT stuff.

I feel sorry for Nuth at the moment, it seems the baby has discovered a liking for football, which wouldn’t be too bad if it had actually been born. Instead it’s doing the best to kick the crap out of it’s mother most of the day. She handles it like a champion though, I have never heard her complain once.

The worst UPS in the world!

Technology, Work August 30th, 2007

We have really bad problems with the power on the island sometimes. It’s got a habit of going off without warning, often for long periods of time. This wasn’t a problem when I was using my laptop with GPRS over my cell phone for internet access. It’s a huge problem now I am using a desktop PC.

So I popped into our local (well only actually) PC shop the other day and ordered a UPS. It’s supposed to run my kit for up to 30 minutes. That’s ok, 30 minutes is plenty long enough to save what I am doing and shut the PC down gracefully. So I handed over 2.5k Baht, bought it home, plugged it in and didn’t think any more about it.

Then yesterday I’m sitting here, up to my neck in code, trying to get a pair of dependant list boxes working (we won’t even go there) and I realise I’m suddenly getting rather warm. This is because the fan I keep about half a metre away from me has stopped working, yep it’s a power outage, this is confirmed by the very weak beep that is coming from the UPS.

So I think I have a few minutes and I almost have this code fixed so I keep working. 30 seconds later the PC loses power, I swear I didn’t get more than a minute from this UPS! It’s bloody useless! I seriously doubt I would have had time to shut down my PC even if I had started the procedure as soon as the power went off. What a piece of junk.
